Rates at 10 month high, White House proposes changes for Fannie-Freddie

While the world was focused on events in Egypt this week some major news was occurring at home for the mortgage industry. The industry took a look back and speculation began as to the future of the industry. If you are a homeowner considering a mortgage refinance or you are contemplating the purchase of a new home and are using the mortgage calculators here is some information that may impact your decision.

Rates jump

Freddie Mac released its Weekly Primary Mortgage Market Survey (PMMS) on February 10, 2011. The PMMS reports the average rate of 125 mortgage origination companies from Monday to Wednesday.

Twin Cities Sellers Taking a Vacation

So each January we see home seller activity increase, bringing more new listings on the market than can be absorbed by buyers at this time of year.  Well this year things seem to be starting different – new listing activity is down almost 20% since the first of the year!

This leads us to the following chart of Twin Cities homes for sale:

The 10% surplus of homes for sale versus the same period last year has now become a 1% deficit in just the last 45 days!  Inventory as of February 14th, 2011 was only 1.6% higher than it was at the first of the year – a paltry 350 listings.  The

Mortgage rates rise for third straight week

In spite of rising tensions in Egypt and elsewhere, it appears foreign affairs had little impact on mortgage rates this week. New home loan and mortgage refinance applicants are continuing to see higher mortgage rates. Important economic data this week is seemingly contradictory and of little help to mortgage calculator users trying to discern which direction mortgage rates will head.

Rates up third week in a row

On Wednesdays Freddie Mac releases its Primary Mortgage Market Survey of 125 lenders nationwide for interest rate data collected from Monday to Wednesday. On Feb. 2, 2011, the PMMS benchmark 30-year fixed rate at a cost of 0.8 origination points was 4.81 percent.
